Fears
Brunswick Blue Dial Watch
The brilliant Fears watch.
Hand built in Britain in small batches.
Graceful and complex, the curvaceous Brunswick Blue is an exacting object to create. It takes its inspiration from a gentleman’s cushion case watch in the Fears archives, first made in 1924.
CASE
The Brunswick’s elegant 38mm cushion-shaped case has only one flat surface - the rear sapphire glass. Its glancing curves are machined from 316L stainless steel in Germany, to a level usually reserved for precious metals. The depth of the polish belies the sophistication of the machinery and the skill of the operator.
The Brunswick is manually wound each day using a traditional ‘onion’-shaped winding crown. Made in Switzerland, the crown’s grooves catch the light, adding a touch of radiance to the edge of the case.
DIAL
The Brunswick Blue features an extraordinary Fears Blue dial that undergoes 56 production processes. At first glance, the Germany made dial appears to have a two-tone sector layout, but when tilted it becomes a tri-tone – all from one colour.
This clever optical illusion is achieved through three layers and two surface finishes combined with a galvanic blue coating. The hand-brushed ring where the numerals sit is unique to each watch, changing colour in the light.
The numerals are applied to the dial by hand, machined from brass and mirror polished before being coated in Rhodium to give them a brilliant shine. The alternate dots receive the same treatment, catching the light perfectly. Watch the dial being made here.
HANDS
The Brunswick Blue’s distinctive ‘Fears’-shaped hands are finished by a watchmaker, giving them a depth and detail not found in mass-produced, stamped watch hands. Each set of hands is subtly skeletonised before being polished to a mirror shine and plated in Rhodium to match the numerals.
Fears is one of only a handful of British watch brands that construct watch hands in-house, in the UK.
MOVEMENT
The Brunswick is powered by a Swiss made, manual winding ETA 7001 movement. This accurate movement was first designed in the 1970s, and its reliability has ensured its continuing popularity today. We service and finish each movement in Britain, with Côtes de Genève striping and Rhodium plating. Once the movement has been re-assembled and thoroughly tested, it receives Fears’ ‘Golden Pipette’, which is handmade and applied to the bridge.
STRAP
Each Brunswick Blue is paired with a handmade Bristol Leather strap in Fears Blue. This premium strap uses calf leather that has been vegetable tanned in Britain’s oldest vegetable tannery, Bristol’s Thomas Ware & Sons. Its stainless steel pin buckle is subtly engraved with our ‘Pipette’ logo. The Brunswick is designed to fit all of the straps in our range, which you can easily fit yourself without tools.
INDIVIDUALLY NUMBERED
Each watch we make carries a unique serial number. Engraved between the 20mm lugs at 12 o’clock, this number helps us identify your watch and its history.
BRITISH BOX
For decades Fears presented watches in a dark blue box with a cream-coloured lining. We are delighted to continue this tradition today.
The Brunswick Blue is presented in a bespoke wooden box, crafted in Britain from English Ash, which is stained Fears Blue. Lined in genuine cream suede, the watch sits proudly on a special cushion. With minimal branding, the outside of the lid reveals a hidden map of Brunswick Square when held in a certain light.
ENGRAVED PERSONAL TO YOU
Fears offers an engraving service whereby a watch can be made personal to its new owner. We work with one of the UK's leading 3D laser engravers who can engrave initials, a date, or a special verse on your watch. Please contact us here to discuss how we can make your watch extra special.
