Brunswick x James Porter & Son Limited Edition
Please note; at the time of writing there may still be the final few pieces remaining, please make contact with James Porter & Son if you are interested in securing one.
Hand built in Britain in small batches for James Porter & Son, this Brunswick is a unique collaboration to commemorate their specialist boutique in the heart of the Argyll Arcade.
Graceful and complex, the curvaceous Brunswick is an exacting object to create. It takes its inspiration from a gentleman’s cushion case watch in the Fears archives, first made in 1924, and a dial colour used in the 1940s and 50s.
- Case: 38 mm, stainless steel, brushed and polished, 20mm lug width
- Dial: Slate grey colour, with black printing and hand applied numerals
- Strap: Pewter grey, barenia calf leather, handmade
- Movement: ETA 7001, time only, manual winding
- Water Resistance: 100 metres (10 ATM)
- Limited Edition: 25 pieces
CASE
The Brunswick’s elegant 38mm cushion-shaped case has no flat surfaces, with even the solid caseback having a gentle sweep. The case’s glancing curves are machined from 316L stainless steel in Hong Kong, to a level usually reserved for precious metals. The depth of the polish belies the sophistication of the machinery and the skill of the operator.
The Brunswick is manually wound each day using a traditional ‘onion’-shaped winding crown. The crown’s grooves catch the light, adding a touch of radiance to the edge of the case.
DIAL
The Brunswick x James Porter & Son Limited Edition features a Gunmetal Grey dial, signed James Porter & Son. This deep tone is created using galvanic plating and the addition of black pigments to the lacquer, the dial frequently undergoes a shifting transition in colour and tone, starting from light, clean grey and gradually transforming into a deep, urban black.
Expertly made in Germany, the surface of the dial features a delicate vertical brushing, applied by hand, making each dial unique and allowing it to catch the light in a beautiful, subtle way. This effect is complemented by the concentric circle finishing on the sunken sub-seconds, at 6 o’clock.
The numerals are applied to the dial by hand, after being diamond polished, sand-blasted, and coated in rhodium, to give a warm, grey finish. The numerals are realised in our custom ‘Edwin’ typeface, specially designed for Fears by a horological typographer and inspired by the many different typefaces the company has used throughout its history.
HANDS
The Brunswick’s distinctive ‘Fears’-shaped hands are precisely milled before being diamond-polished to a perfect shine. Each skeletonised hand is then carefully coated in layers of Rhodium to match the applied numerals. Highly legible even in low light conditions, they sparkle when the light catches them.
MOVEMENT
The Brunswick is powered by a Swiss made, manual winding ETA 7001 movement. This accurate movement was first designed in the 1970s, and its reliability has ensured its continuing popularity today. Each movement features blued screws and Côtes de Genève striping.
STRAP
Handmade from Barenia leather in Pewter Grey with dark grey stitching, this strap lends a more contemporary feel to the watch. The premium leather takes its name from the village of Barr in Alsace, from where it originates. Traditionally used for saddles, this smooth calfskin leather requires a complex tanning process, known by only a small number of craftsmen. Lined in genuine Alcantara® dyed a deep shade of blue, this lining is supremely soft against the skin yet resistant against wear. The strap is fitted with a stainless steel pin buckle that is subtly engraved with our logo.
INDIVIDUALLY NUMBERED
Each watch we make carries a unique serial number. Engraved between the 20mm lugs at 12 o’clock, this number helps us identify your watch and its history.
AMOS BOX
The entire Fears core collection is now presented in a slim, rectangular, wooden box made of solid ash and stained in our bespoke Fears Blue colour. This luxury box was inspired by traditional slim Fears watch boxes used in the past, in which the watch lay flat. Recognising the companies heritage, we called this box the Amos, after the 2nd and 3rd Managing Directors.
The top of the box is discretely engraved with the Fears logo and features a gentle bevel around its edges, whilst the interior is lined in genuine cream suede. The box is secured by a polished chrome push button, keeping your watch safe and secure.
